Ultimate Test of British Resolve

I have never doubted the resolve of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, but I am not so sure about his people’s determination to see the war against Islamo-fascism through to the end. The question of day (year/millennium): Will today’s savage attack by al-Qaeda on the London subway cause Brits to strengthen or weaken their will in fighting terror? In reaction to the bombings, Blair was erudite as usual: It is important that those engaged in terrorism realise that our determination to defend our values and our way of life is greater than their determination to cause death and destruction to innocent people in a desire to impose extremism on the world. Well said. The Prime Minister’s words will fall on the deaf ears of Britain’s left-wing appeasers. Fortunately, these cowards do not make up the majority of Brits. Blair won an unprecedented third term in office earlier this year, despite the fact that he is President Bush’s closest ally, and Britain maintains the second largest contingent of troops in post-war Iraq. Blair’s Labour Party now holds 356 seats in parliament, while the Conservatives (Tories) hold 198. The Tories actually gained seats in this year’s election, and the party’s leader, Michael Howard, insists that, he himself would still have voted in favour of the war, even if he had known that the evidence for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction was sketchy or non-existent. But this is all speculation on my part. The bombings just occurred today. We will have to wait and see how the British people react en masse. I pray that Brits will stand firm and not hide under their beds from terrorists as the Spanish did in 2003. |
