William Kristol has a daring take on what, really, is happening with all the Bush-lied-about-yellowcake-from-Africa snafu. Just how could it be that the President has arranged the flesh-riddled muddy waters in which the piranha partake in a frenzy of Bush-hate? Well, Mr. Kristol gives us the result.
George W. Bush's one great and unforgivable sin, it seems, was to have acted on the judgment that Saddam Hussein was a present danger--acted, as Clinton and Gore repeatedly threatened but failed to do, the way a serious president must. At his moment of decision, the American people supported Bush. They support him still. And the fact of that support--as the Democrats' hysterical attack on a 16-word sentence in the State of the Union suggests--is driving one of our two major political parties...stark, raving mad.
These are optimistic words. While I gratefully admit that Bush has cojones, would he take the risk of stirring up the hysteria that is brainwashing the herd? I'm not so sure but it's an entertaining idea. The problem is, though, that insanity has a way of getting dangerously out of control, even if you stand back and watch the show with a grin on your face the way Kristol does. This situation, whatever the real forces behind it, will require the sheer finesse of the Bush team. It promises to be a sultry political summer.
