Peter Arnett Gets Canned for His Reportage
By Andrew L. Jaffee, 3/31/2003

After initially defending reporter Peter Arnett for giving an interview to Saddam's Iraqi TV, NBC has now fired him. National Geographic also fired Arnett.

In his Iraqi TV interview, Arnett provided fodder for Saddam's propaganda cannon. Arnett said that the coalition military forces' "war plan has failed due to Iraqi resistance".

So the U.S.-led coalition has already failed? Yep, time to surrender to Saddam, commit suicide, and have our forces' bodies sent home. We have no chance of winning. NOT!

Arnett holds an interesting opinion as the war is only 12 days old, and coalition forces already control 40 percent of Iraq, control 95 percent of its airspace, and are just 50 miles from Baghdad. All this after only 12 days of war!

What is Arnett thinking? Obviously, he's not. He is just another example of cheap "reportage." This is not reporting. This is the lowest form of editorializing (wishful thinking).

Arnett's apology was contrite and arrogant. He said this morning, "I said over the weekend what we all know about the war." Really? What do we all know? We know that 74 percent of Americans support the war, and the impressive statistics I quoted above.

Finally, Arnett said "Clearly by giving that interview I created a firestorm in the United States, and for that I'm truly sorry." What he's really saying is "those stupid, SUV-driving, ignorant Americans can't take my haughty criticism, because I'm really right (even though I'm wrong)."

Good riddance to Arnett. I want fair and balanced reporting of the war, not "reportage."

Write to NBC News and let them know what you think.
