Is Hans Blix Hiding Information?
By Andrew L. Jaffee, 3/10/2003

Why did Hans Blix fail to mention last week that UN inspectors had discovered an Iraqi rocket capable of delivering chemical or biological weapons? Blix was testifying before the UN Security Council regarding Iraqi compliance/non-compliance with UN resolutions calling for Iraq to disarm. When else would an inspector bring up such an issue? Nor did Blix mention an Iraqi drone aircraft also capable of dispersing chem/bio weapons.

Blix left these details to his written report. Based on Blix's reluctance to discuss these "minor details" when in the international spotlight, one wonders if he's just playing politics. Pundits like to say Blix always tries to give everybody something--a little bit for the appeasers, and a little for the U.S. block.

This characterization of Blix as straddling the fence is too kind. Based on his failure to openly discuss the newly-discovered missile and drone (which are prohibited weapons), he obviously falls into the camp of the appeasers.

The international rumor mill is spinning quickly based of these new revelations. Apparently, Russia and China have quietly withdrawn any intention to use their veto power in the Security Council. This leaves only France. France wants to be a super-power, but can only do so by being a paper tiger. Their veto would put them in the history books as a Saddam appeaser for the record. Let them show their true colors.
