Observers from the African Union (AU) say that the Arab pro-Sudanese government militia Janjaweed has burned Black African civilians alive in Darfur. According to the BBC, Men rode into a village on horseback, looted the market and chained people up before setting them on fire, they say. The AU observers visited Suleia on July 3 and found that the entire village had been “burnt and deserted.” The Sudanese government has been sponsoring this campaign of forced starvation, rape, mass murder, and ethnic cleansing for some time now. Sudan has been promising to put a stop to these atrocities, but there is no evidence they have done so. Human Rights Watch has warned …that Sudan's government "rarely ever" honoured its promises. This Sudanese Arab ethnic cleansing campaign has left 10,000 dead, driven one million people from their homes, and threatens 300,000 to one million more with starvation. According to Médecins Sans Frontières, 3 children per 10,000 people per day are dying in Sudan’s western Darfur province. The U.S. and E.U. are pushing for sanctions to be imposed on Sudan. Algeria, China, Egypt, and Pakistan are opposing sanctions at the U.N. The British government has hinted at military intervention to protect Darfur refugees. Sudan has promised to prevent any such intervention with its military forces. More on Darfur: |
