19 U.S. soldiers and 3 “foreign military personnel” were killed today in a homicide bombing in Mosul, Iraq. At least 60 people were injured. The Ansar al-Sunna terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack which targeted a tent used by U.S. personnel for dining.

This attack adds to a growing list of recent atrocities committed by Iraq’s Sunni terrorists. Their violence is obviously aimed at ending hopes for democratic elections scheduled to be held in January.

The terrorists, especially the Sunnis, have the most to lose from Iraqi elections. Democracy is an anathema to their Islamist dreams of a worldwide caliphate. But, most importantly, the Sunni minority have terrorized Iraq’s other ethnic/religious groups for decades. They fear losing their old power, which they will most surely lose no matter what happens.

The Shiites are the majority. The Sunnis will lose in any elections, not just because they are the minority, but because Iraq’s other groups will never vote for their former torturers. Instead of taking their chances through the democratic process, these Sunni barbarians choose murder.

In one way, the terrorists do understand democracy: it means their death both metaphorically and literally. In another way, they have absolutely no idea what freedom means. Obviously, they are so afraid of freedom that they will kill anyone, anyway to “preserve” their notion of reality, e.g., dictatorship.
