One would think that Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych would show concern for his country’s well-being and just concede the election. Ukraine’s Central Election Commission has certified that opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko has won the election with 51.9% of the vote, compared to 44.2% for Yanukovych. 77% of eligible voters turned out. Yanukovych lost by by 7.7% or 2 million votes. But he’s still throwing a tantrum.

Ukraine's Supreme Court today discarded Yanukovych’s appeal to “re-examine complaints about the election.” After his “win” in the first round of elections, opposition protests nearly shut down Kiev, parliament dismissed Yanukovych’s government, and the Supreme Court ruled that Yanukovych’s victory was “fraudulent.” On a positive note, Mr. Yanukovych resigned as prime minister.

But his behavior has oligarch – dictator, if you will – written all over it. If he was a true patriot, he’d let Ukrainian democracy flourish. He still has an opportunity to challenge the election results, but it is a futile exercise. Democracy has won in the Ukraine. Yanukovych is finished – but he won’t go out with a whimper. He’ll go kicking and screaming. All’s I can say to Yanukovych is, “Don’t let the door hit you in your ass on the way out.”
