Abbas Not Serious About Stopping Terror

Could it be that new Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is serious about reigning in terrorists? Or are his actions just another fata morgana, like those of his predecessor, Yasser Arafat? Hamas, one of the world’s worst terrorist groups, lobbed rockets and mortars into an Israeli settlement today. According to the BBC, Mr Abbas gave "strict instructions" to prevent further threats to a ceasefire he agreed with Israel on Tuesday. On January 21, Abbas ordered about 3,000 Palestinian police into northern Gaza “to prevent militants firing rockets at Israeli targets.” What were the 3,000 Palestinian police doing today when Hamas was attacking Israeli civilians from northern Gaza? Again, the BBC, The Hamas attacks started at about 0300 local time (0500 GMT) and lasted several hours. Hamas thugs were firing rockets and mortars for “several hours” and not even one of the Palestinian police noticed? Is this Oslo all over again? Lots of Palestinian bluster but no action? The BBC today titled its article, “Abbas orders security crackdown.” Really? Where’s the “crackdown?” Palestinian terrorists seem to be doing as they will, as usual. I can already hear the appeasers: “Abbas needs time to consolidate his power,” or “You can’t expect Palestinians to kill other Palestinians,” or “You have to understand that Hamas also provides social programs.” Enough is enough. Israelis have suffered a 100 years of Arab violence. No more excuses. If Abbas and his Palestinian Authority truly want peace with Israel, then blood must be spilt. There is no other choice. Palestinians must kill other Palestinians. No civilized society permits terrorists to roam free. If Palestinians want their own state, then they will have to start acting like a civilized people. I’m not getting my hopes up... yet. |
