Toronto, Canada – Tuesday, 26 October, 2005 - Today, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad openly called for Israel to be wiped off the face of the earth and for the ethnic cleansing of all Jews from the Middle East. In a speech reminiscent of Adolf Hitler, he called on Palestinians to execute “the annihilation of the Zionist regime”. He threatened Muslim leaders, saying “Any leaders in the Islamic umma who recognise Israel face the wrath of their own people.”
Canadian Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew issued a statement in response to Iran’s genocidal belligerence, saying “On behalf of all Canadians, I want to vigorously condemn the remarks made by Iran’s President.” Pettigrew went on to threaten Iran with “the possibility that the UN Security Council may have to send a strong message.” When challenged in the in the House of Commons today, Paul Martin refused to consider asking the UN to impose sanctions against Iran.
“Canada has signalled to Iran that there will be no consequences for threatening and inciting a holocaust,” said Alastair Gordon, President of the Canadian Coalition for Democracies (CCD). “Imagine this regime modifying its behaviour because Pettigrew threatened them with a ’strong message’.”
“Will Canada recall our ambassador from Tehran and send the Iranian ambassador back with a message that Canada wants no relationship with such a regime?” asked Gordon.
In a related development, Iranian-funded Islamic Jihad today claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in a market in Hadera, Israel that killed at least 5 and wounded 30.
“Canada’s foreign policy has taken a new, and even more egregious, twist lately. The slaughter of Israelis no longer elicits even the traditional perfunctory condemnation from Paul Martin quickly followed by the usual moral equivalency between the victims and their cold-blooded killers.” added Gordon. “For several months, Ottawa has absolutely no comment to make when Israelis are killed by Palestinian terrorists. What has changed?”
“Iran murdered a Canadian photojournalist, bankrolled countless terrorist outrages against Israel, is developing a nuclear bomb, and is now calling for the annihilation of an entire nation and its people,” said Gordon. “And Paul Martin tells them that the only consequence will be a ’strong message’.”
“Paul Martin owes Canadians an explanation for his government’s growing hostility toward Israel, our only democratic ally in the Middle East.”
