de Villepin solution: panem et circenses

Will placating the rioters encourage them to integrate into French society, or will it just embolden their “demands.” From AFX:

Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin unveiled a raft of social and economic measures designed to improve conditions in France’s tough, low-income neighbourhoods that have spawned unrest raging across the country. …

The initiatives are:

- the creation of an anti-discrimination agency with special officials appointed to be in charge of certain regions, and making the fight against discrimination a national priority;

- 20,000 job contracts with local government bodies or associations paid a minimum wage would be reserved for those in the suburbs struggling to find work;

- an extra 100 million euros (120 million dollars) for associations that work in the neighbourhoods;

- 5,000 more teaching assistant posts in the 1,200 schools in districts designated as troublespots;

- the creation of 15 more special economic zones that provide tax breaks to companies that set up inside them as an incentive to boost local employment.

Villepin also said ’social imbalances due to an insufficiently controlled flow of clandestine immigration’ would be tackled.

Sounds good in theory, but what message does this send to immigrants about integration through hard work and the airing of grievances peaceably? Would not the priority be to restore order first, and send a clear message that rioting is unacceptable?

France has already poured billions into entitlements — “the welfare budget, which in France is far bigger than the central government budget.” French largess has been repaid with riots.

    Rioting is unacceptable alright, but that sounds good in theory as well, try to explain that to a bunch of people who are fed up with years of discrimination.

    Definitely yes. Rioters should not be rewarded but sent back to the countries where they came from (after repaying damages they inflicted). For centuries Frenchmen discriminate against Britons so what? Myself had bad experiences when calling French ports because nobody wanted to talk to me in English, although they understand it perfectly. Had to get a crush course in French but never thought to burn cars out of frustration.
    Off the topic but may be helpful: If you want to learn a foreign language find a person to fall in love with. Learning a language will be a piece of cake. Guaranteed. Well, no money back if it doesn’t work for everybody!!!
    Rioters took advantage of the lenient French society and decency of the French culture, in the countries they run away from not even a thought of rioting would be tolerated. Simply, they would have been shot. Discrimination my foot, Muslims discriminate Muslims more than anyone else otherwise why they are emigrating. I haven’t heard of millions Europeans or Latinos or any normal person emigrating to Islamic states (few nutcases maybe)
    Economic reasons can not stand as excuse since all immigrants to western countries are better of (if they care to work) then those left behind. Just who is sending money to whom? Flow is from West to east and not vice versa.
    There is plenty work in France, of course it’s easier to live on the government handouts. France should abolish Islam inside it’s borders before it’s too late, it’s religion of hate if it can be called a religion at all, and has no place in the advanced societies. Freedom and democracy should not be abused but respected, cherished and above all practiced.
    One last thought. Why they are burning Synagogues and schools, government should give them some of the same medicine by demolishing their Mosques that are places where the imams teach hate against the people that welcomed them to freedom. Dogs biting the hands that feed them? Typical Islamic behaviour: Kick out of the house the host that invited you in! They did it in Israel, Egypt, Sudan, practically all over the North Africa…the list is too long.
    Don’t think anyone of those brats ever heard “When in Rome behave like a roman”. Would they understand it?
