As Kofi Annan met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the two men posed and smiled for the press cameras. The talks were held to convince Iran to give up its nuke program, but of course Ahmadinejad refused and will continue to refuse, as he has the backing of UN Security Council member states Russia and China, busy making money off selling arms to the Islamic Republic. How nice. Picture perfect.
But one notable event in Annan’s visit to Iran was his mention of the Holocaust, as President Ahmadinejad has urged that Israel be “wiped off the map,” has denied that the Holocaust ever occurred, called for Israel’s Jews to be moved to Europe (ethnically cleansed), and has planned a conference to “prove” that Hitler’s extermination of Jews (and gypsies and gays) was a “myth.” Here’s what happened:
The issue of the Holocaust also surfaced during Mr Annan’s visit.
Iran said it would go ahead with sponsoring a conference on the scientific evidence of the Holocaust, calling it exaggerated.
Mr Annan linked the issue to that of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, which incensed the Muslim world.
He said the cartoons had shown freedom of expression had to be “exercised with responsibility, with sensitivity and judgement”.
There is currently an exhibition in Tehran of cartoons on the Holocaust.
Mr Annan added: “I think the tragedy of the Holocaust is a sad and undeniable historical fact and so we should really handle that.
“We have to be careful, words can soothe and words can harm, and we should be careful not to say anything that is used as an excuse for incitement to hatred or violence”.
So are we to believe that Kofi Annan is concerned about historical facts? After all, it was Annan who defined the “disproportionate use of force” term used to vilify Israel’s self-defense against Hezbollah’s indiscriminate targeting of Jewish (and Israeli Arab and even Palestinian) civilian population centers.
No, we shouldn’t buy it. In the same visit, Annan was praising the same regime that stoked Hezbollah’s hellish fires and continues to pursue development of the ultimate source of hellfire, nuclear weapons:
Mr Annan said Iran was an important regional player and the president had assured him it would play that role.
Annan represents the worst of what the UN represents. Yes, the Holocaust is acknowledged by Annan, but as a historical footnote. At the same time, he congratulates the next instigator of the next Holocaust as a “important regional player.”

[…] The Democratic “leadership” was all ready to sell the security of the U.S., Europe, and Israel down the river. They really want to believe (X-Files) in placating Iran’s Islamist dictators, who’ve promised to “wipe Israel off the map,” and who chant mantras like “all of us should mobilize to kill.” Iran’s rockets already threaten most of Europe, not to mention all of the Middle East. Imagine Tehran’s behavior if its WMD delivery media were tipped with nukes. […]
