An open letter to MoveOn.org-endorsed candidates

Ed. note: netwmd.com has sent the following letter to MoveOn.org-endorsed candidates, asking them to denounce and reject the endorsement, as MoveOn’s Action Forum has become a hotbed of anti-Semitic, racist, and anti-Christian hate speech, including promulgation of 9/11 conspiracy theories. The original letter text was authored by Bill Levinson.

An open letter to MoveOn.org-endorsed candidates:

Ned Lamont (CT)
Patrick Murphy (PA-08)
Diane Farrell (CT-04)
Robert Byrd (WV)
Bob Casey(PA)
Nick Lampson (TX-22)
Sherrod Brown (OH)
Francine Busby (CA-50)
Bill Nelson (FL)

Bona fide Democrats do not condone racist or anti-Semitic bigotry, so it is difficult to understand your inability to distance yourselves from MoveOn.org. It was revealed in August that MoveOn.org’s Action Forum is a hotbed of anti-Semitic, racist, and anti-Christian hate speech, including promulgation of 9/11 conspiracy theories.

The worst of the anti-Semitic slurs posted on MoveOn’s Action Forum accused Jews of being more loyal to Israel than to the United States, controlling the news media, and refusing to serve in our Armed Forces. Racist commentary derided Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice as “house slaves” while suggesting that African-American soldiers be segregated and disarmed as potential mutineers. The 9/11 conspiracy theories posted on MoveOn’s Action Forum accused the Bush Administration and/or Jewish real estate developers of conspiring to blow up the World Trade Center. Such commentary usually garnered overwhelming approval (70 to 95 percent in most cases) from the other participants.

When MoveOn was confronted with such material, its excuse was that anyone, even sinister but unnamed conservative operatives, could post material to the Action Forum. However, MoveOn’s exercise of editorial control over the forum makes it 100 percent responsible for the content no matter who posted it. The Action Forum’s moderators were very diligent in finding and deleting postings that, for example, criticized MoveOn as a liability to the Democratic Party. The fact that the moderators could and did censor material with which they disagreed while letting the hate speech and 9/11 conspiracy theories remain posted places MoveOn.org beyond the pale of decent and rational political discourse.

When the Ku Klux Klan attempted to endorse Ronald Reagan for president, he denounced and rejected the endorsement, adding that he preferred that the Klan not mention his name in public. When former Klansman David Duke ran for office as a Republican, genuine Republicans distanced themselves from him.

MoveOn.org has nothing to do with anything that mainstream Democrats would recognize as their party, or that of their parents or grandparents. We therefore call upon the above-named candidates who have been endorsed by MoveOn to repudiate its support clearly, forcefully, and unambiguously — the way Reagan repudiated the Ku Klux Klan’s support.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
