“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
- George Orwell, Animal Farm
Referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team, Don Imus said, “That’s some nappy-headed hos there, I’m going to tell you that.” Imus should be canned, plain and simple, and unequivocally. There’s no excuse or apology for this kind of bigotry. But it may surprise you to find that Imus is in “good” company with high-profile members and/or affiliates of the Democratic Party, who supposedly stand against all forms of racism.
When Howard Dean was asked, “You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room?” he replied, “Only if they had the hotel staff in here,” referring to African-Americans. Joe Biden said of Barack Obama: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.” Democratic Senator Robert Byrd once belonged to the KKK and used the term “white nigger” on national television. NAACP President Kweisi Mfume called Condi Rice, Colin Powell, and Roderick R. Paige “hustlers” and “yes men.” Harry Belafonte called these outstanding African-Americans “Uncle Toms”. Belafonte also stated, “Hitler had a lot of Jews high up in the hierarchy of the Third Reich.” After 9/11, Professor Ward Churchill of the U of Colorado “called the victims ‘little Eichmanns,’ comparing them to Adolf Eichmann, the architect of Hitler’s plan to eradicate Europe’s Jews.” Kamau Kambon, visiting professor at North Carolina State University, called for the extermination of all white people on the planet. As Orwell said, “Four legs good, two legs bad.” Has our body politic been idiotically reduced to Orwell’s nightmare metaphor?
Imus’ head will probably roll, but those he’s in “good” company with will most likely hold onto their cushy jobs, selectively protecting some of us from certain others, only in certain special circumstances…
