A Case Study: Violating and Enforcing the Immigration Law

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

By David North, CIS.org

Sometimes it is useful to take a look at case histories of the violations of, and the enforcement of, the immigration law.

It is well known that it often takes the government a long time to wrap up a criminal case involving a violation of the immigration law.

Sometimes the process of breaking the law takes a long time, too. Here is an example of both processes.

Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper Defiantly Defends Israel

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

All’s I can say is “Oh, Canada!” Our northern neighbor’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper continues to defiantly defend Israel — which is a lot more than I can say for my own joke-for-a-President Obama. Read, watch, listen, and stand with Stephen Harper and Israel:

… But when Israel, the only country in the world whose very existence is under attack, is consistently and conspicuously singled out for condemnation, I believe we are morally obligated to take a stand. Demonization, double standards, delegitimization — the three “D’s” — it is the responsibility of us all to stand up to them. …

Bias Expected, Evidence Optional for NYU Professor

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

by Alan Jacobs*

An audience of 40 journalism students and die-hard fans packed the TV studio at New York University’s Carter Journalism Institute on Wednesday, November 3. Visibly excited to meet cartoon journalist Joe Sacco after a discussion of his work with NYU’s Middle East professor Zachary Lockman, a number of students arrived early to get their copies of Sacco’s new graphic novel, Footnotes in Gaza, and his older work, Palestine, autographed. After thirty or so Starbucks espressos were discarded and most phones were silenced, the “conversation,” part of an NYU series entitled “Primary Sources: Coverage in Context,” began on schedule. The conversation focused mainly on Footnotes in Gaza, which employs comic strips to chronicle alleged Israeli abuses in Gaza in 1956.

Palestinian TV: ‘I say that [Arafat] died from poisoning by the Jews’

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

Once again, Israel’s “peace partner,” the Palestinian Authority (PA), talks “peace” to Westerners, but poisons the minds of its own people with the vilest hatred via state-controlled TV. A little Palestinian girl told PA TV, “I say that he [Arafat] died from poisoning by the Jews.” (Watch her.) She doesn’t know that Yasser Arafat, the monster, led her ancestors — his and her people — from one disaster to another, from the failed and suicidal takeover of Jordan (”Black September”), to destroying Lebanon, to his “recognition” of Israel during the Oslo debacle, and in July 2000 his rejection of Israel’s generous offer to end the conflict. Palestinian terrorists then responded to Israel’s offer with the “most sustained wave of Palestinian suicide bombings in Israeli history.” The Palestinian Authority never lived up to its Oslo commitments. Arafat’s legacy is sickening, as we see below.

It’s Time to Ban the Veil: The Chilling Lesson from the Elizabeth Smart Case

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

by Phyllis Chesler

He hid her in plain sight.

Her face was on posters plastered all over Utah, her kidnapping had launched one of the greatest manhunts in American history. Nevertheless, Brian Mitchell, the man who kidnapped 14 year-old Elizabeth Smart at knife-point in her bedroom actually got away with it for nine months. He kept Elizabeth as his sex slave and “second wife” for that long.

Only now, is he finally standing trial for his crimes; rather, only now is Mitchell’s “competency” to stand trial being legally tested.

This past week, in a hushed courtroom, Elizabeth took the stand.

Hebron Fund “Flotilla” Dinner Sails to Success in New York

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

By Fern Sidman

Over 600 people boarded a luxury multi-level vessel called “The Cornucopia Majesty” at Pier 59 at Chelsea Piers on Tuesday evening, November 16th, as they set sail around the island of Manhattan in a unique celebration of Jewish life in Hebron. The “flotilla supporting peace and life” was the venue of choice for the 22nd annual gala Hebron Fund Dinner in New York.

In a twist of irony, the organizers of the dinner selected this setting as a direct response to the international condemnation of Israel following the Mavi Marmara episode on May 31st, in which Israeli commandos boarded the Turkish flagged ship that was headed to Gaza with the intent of breaking the naval blockade that Israel had imposed in order to prevent the smuggling of lethal weaponry to Hamas terrorists in the region. The purported “peace activists” on board the “Gaza Aid Flotilla” brandished knives and guns and violently attacked Israeli soldiers.

Rangel: My, How the Mighty (Mightily Immoral) Hypocrites Fall

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

The President [Bush] is destroying the fabric of America with a combined policy of war, tax cuts for the wealthy, and reductions in spending for domestic needs.

- Charles B. Rangel

It wasn’t bad enough that Democrats were soundly rebuked by American voters just weeks ago. One of the most well-known, Democratic fixtures of U.S. politics, Rep. Charles B. Rangel, has been caught red-handed for, “improper fundraising, failure to pay taxes, and failure to report income on his Congressional financial disclosure forms.” According to the New York Times, “The House ethics committee Thursday recommended that … Rangel be formally censured for ethical misconduct, the most serious punishment the House can mete out short of expelling a member.” In other words, Rangel’s a big, fat lying cheating hypocrite who wants all us plebeians to keep our mouths shut, feel guilty for being Americans, and to do as ol’ Charlie says, not do as he does. Not only did he scam the American people, but also lied to them, as the Wall Street Journal pointed out more than a year ago:

Terrorism: A Weak State Incubates Terror

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

By Jonathan Spyer

The revelations last week of a sophisticated plot emanating from the Yemen-based al- Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula organization have belatedly refocused attention on this most backward and poverty stricken of Arab states. The sending of explosive packages to synagogues in Chicago is only the latest act of international terror to have emerged from Yemen in the last year.

Yemen today exemplifies the central malaise of the Arab world in particularly acute form. Throughout the Arabic-speaking world, failed development, a political culture in which extremist Islamist ideology thrives and Iranian interference and subversion from outside serve to create a breeding ground for political violence to grow and proliferate.

Muslims Project Islam’s Worst Traits onto Israel and the Jews

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

by Raymond Ibrahim*

Sometime back, I noted that Muslims have been projecting the worst aspects of Islam(ism) onto the Copts, Egypt’s Christian minority.  This raised more questions: Is Islamist projection onto the Copts a unique phenomenon? Do Muslims project against other non-Muslims? Is there a trend?

To answer this question, it seemed logical to begin with how Islamists approach their archenemy: Israel and the Jews.  Thinking this may be difficult to prove–it is one thing to hate your enemy per se, another to project unconsciously your worst traits onto them–I expected this might require some research.  I went to MEMRI and, lo and behold, in mere minutes, came across three blatant examples.  Consider the following excerpts, especially the italicized portions:

American Jewish History Celebrated in the City of Brotherly Love

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

By Fern Sidman

Contemporary American Jewry experienced one of it’s signature moments on Sunday afternoon, November 14th, as over 1000 people from all over the world gathered to attend the spectacular dedication and grand opening of a “first of its kind” museum on Independence Mall in Philadelphia. Originally founded in 1976, The National Museum of American Jewish History has shared a building with the historic Congregation Mikveh Israel, but now is being housed in a $150 million, 5-story state of the art building, designed by famed architect James Stewart Polshek.

Oklahomans Say No to Sharia

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

by Daniel Pipes*

As Americans learn more about Islam, the aspect they find most objectionable is not its theology (such as whether Allah is God or not) nor its symbolism (such as an Islamic cultural center in lower Manhattan) but its law code, called the Sharia. Rightly, they say no to a code that privileges Muslims over non-Muslims, men over women, and contains many elements inimical to modern life.

The Hour of the Hanging Judges: Demonizing Israel and Pretending It Is Ordinary Criticism

Monday, November 15th, 2010

By Barry Rubin

This is getting to be a pretty common kind of story. The mayor of Frankfurt invites a Jewish intellectual whose family left Germany in 1932 to speak on the anniversary of Kristallnacht. The problem is that this man, Alfred Grosser, is a ferocious critic of Israel.

Grosser claims the Gaza Strip is a concentration camp (possibly true, but if so it is a concentration camp owned and run by Hamas); calls for ending Israel as a Jewish state; urges Germany to be more critical of Israel; and blames Israeli policies (rather than the deliberate lies about them) as being responsible for increasing antisemitism (isn’t that what George Soros said?)

Population, Immigration, and the Drying of the American Southwest

Monday, November 15th, 2010

By Kathleene Parker, CIS.org

This Backgrounder offers an historical overview of the critical issue of water in the American Southwest, where the water situation is becoming increasingly dire during a prolonged — but not uncharacteristic — drought in the arid region. We also examine the demographic trends that drive high rates of U.S. and, as a result, Southwest population growth. We present evidence that indicates there is insufficient water for the region’s current population, much less the larger future populations that will result if immigration continues at its present high rate.

Key findings include:

British serviceman refused service by Asian cab driver

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

By Andrew L. Jaffee

Britain’s restive immigrant community continues to spit on the brave men on women who risk their lives to protect all citizens of the UK, according to the Yorkshire Post. This comes just days after British Muslims defiled an Armistice Day ceremony in London by chanting, “British soldiers burn in hell.” From the Post:

AN inquiry is underway after an RAF serviceman was refused a cab by an Asian taxi driver in Sheffield who objected to his uniform. …

“When the cab pulled up they were about to get in when the driver said he wasn’t letting my son in because he was in uniform.

“My wife asked him for a reason and the driver became quite aggressive in turning them down. He made it quite clear it was because my son was in the forces. …

“It is totally disgusting. The driver did not give an opinion but made it apparent he did not like servicemen.” …
