Somalia: Does Anyone Care Except Ethiopia?

Monday, December 25th, 2006

By Andrew L. Jaffee

Ethiopia has admitted openly to combating the forces of Islamo-fascism in Somalia. Good for Ethiopia. At least someone cares enough to oppose the spreading of the utterly intolerant, totalitarian virus which has now established a beach-head in the horn of Africa. Where has the West been regarding the Islamist takeover of Somalia — except for a few token diplomatic statements?

Afghanistan Again: Somalia Falling to Al Qaeda

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

by Daveed Gartenstein-Ross*

Al Qaeda’s allies in Somalia are on the verge of seizing the secular government’s last stronghold - opening the possibility of a “new Afghanistan” to shelter America’s enemies.

Somalia is at a critical juncture. In the coming days, the world will learn whether the transitional federal government is strong enough to fend off the terrorists’ assault. If it fails, al-Qaeda will win its first countrywide safe haven since 9/11.

Sudan: Anger Means Guilt

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

By Andrew L. Jaffee

Since February 2003, the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the government-sponsored Janjaweed militia have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers and mass murder to kill more than 400,000 and displace almost 2.5 million people. Violence, disease, and displacement continue to kill thousands of innocent Darfurians every month.

- Genocide Intervention Network

That any government would sponsor such an atrocity is unconscionable. Maybe a little bit of embarrassment? Not at all. The Khartoum government continues to support this genocide, is completely unrepentant, and now very angry at the UN because one of its envoys, Jan Pronk:

A New Terrorist Haven: The frightening advance of Islamists in Somalia

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

by Daveed Gartenstein-Ross & Bill Roggio*

WHEN FIGHTERS from the radical Islamic Courts Union (ICU) seized Mogadishu, capital of Somalia, in early June, the Western world briefly noticed. Analysts and talking heads were concerned that the country could become a terrorist haven. Then the media largely lost interest, though the situation remains dire. The ICU is on the verge of winning an even bigger strategic victory, and its links to international terrorism have become impossible to deny.

Somalia’s Islamist Lifeguards

Friday, October 20th, 2006

By Andrew L. Jaffee

As a kid, I remember many a summer day at the public pool when the lifeguards would burst our bubble by calling, “Everyone out of the pool — timeout.” The lifeguards would regularly empty the pool so that children wouldn’t get too tired. Oh, woe is me. What suffering (NOT!) to have grown up in the U.S. While the Left complains about Western “imperialism,” it takes for granted all those things that make liberty wonderful, and sweeps Islamist savagery under the rug.

Somalis are not so fortunate. The new Taliban have ordered women out of the pool:

No Let-up in Sudan Genocide Against Black Africans

Monday, October 9th, 2006

By Andrew L. Jaffee

There’s been no let-up in Sudan’s Arab/Muslim genocide against Black Africans in the Darfur province. So the UN will maybe pass another resolution which someone else will have to enforce? From the BBC:

Hundreds of Sudanese have been killed in attacks in Darfur, with the apparent knowledge and support of the government, a UN report says.

Somali Islamists Go Psycho

Monday, October 9th, 2006

By Andrew L. Jaffee

Just as I had warned, when writing about the BBC’s whitewashing of Somalia’s Islamists, those same Muslim madmen have declared “holy war” against neighboring Ethiopia. A Somalia ruled by Islamists will be a cancer as malignant as was the Taliban in Afghanistan — despite the BBC’s submission to terrorism (which is what their whitewashing is really about — terrorism works). From Reuters:

Somalia’s powerful Islamists on Monday declared holy war against Horn of Africa rival Ethiopia, which they accused of invading Somalia to prop up the shaky interim government.

“Starting from today, we have declared jihad against Ethiopia,” Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Ahmed told a news conference, while wearing combat fatigues and clutching an AK-47 assault rifle.

Ahmed, usually viewed as a more moderate voice among the Islamists who took Mogadishu in June and now control much of Somalia’s south, appeared angry as he addressed reporters.

Oh, sheesh… Another media outlet calling a guy who brandishes AK-47s a “moderate voice.”

BBC Whitewashes Somalia’s Islamists

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

By Andrew L. Jaffee

While reading the BBC’s coverage of the Union of Islamic Courts’ (UIC) takeover of Somalia — what I see as the beginning of Taliban II — I was struck with the carefully constructed wording of the British news organization’s language. Their writers tiptoe around Islamist expansionism, yet are critical of dhimmi fears of Muslim radicalism — e.g., from the West and Ethiopia. First, I stumbled upon a BBC report on refugees fleeing the UIC’s advances into villages near the Kenyan border:

Afghanistan II

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

By Andrew L. Jaffee

What’s Bill Clinton so angry about? (In this case, anger = defensiveness.) He cut and ran in 1993 from Somali after 18 American soldiers were killed. Now, we are witnessing the birth of another lawless, Islamist, terror central in Somalia. If the Union of Islamic Courts has its way, taking the place of the Taliban, Somalia will become the next Afghanistan, a headquarters for the planning of terrorist attacks against the West. What will we do? We’ve already got Iran, North Korea, Hezbollah, Hamas, al-Qaeda, etc., on our plate. Can we act by proxy, through neighboring Ethiopia? From the BBC:

Islamist fighters have reportedly advanced to the outskirts of Kismayo, the only port outside their control in central and southern Somalia.

Residents say the local militia withdrew in 40 trucks without a shot being fired as fighters loyal to the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) arrived.

Thousands of people are reported to have fled the city in recent days.

The UIC had said it will occupy Kismayo to stop a foreign peacekeeping force using it as a bridgehead.

Introduction

The interest and presence of global Jihad groups in Africa is not new, particularly in the eastern and northern parts of the continent. Yet, more recently, in the wake of political violence in Sudan and Somalia, it seems that Africa is becoming a viable region for Al-Qaeda. This has manifested itself through organized Jihadi radicalism, and self-radicalized sympathizers of global Jihad, which follow the strategy and doctrines of Al-Qaeda and its supportive clerics and scholars. In the past year we have witnessed a growing presence of new formed Jihadi groups in Africa, which use old and more recent violent conflicts to radicalize African Islamic elements, recruit support, and bring the African arena under the Jihadi “global umbrella.”
